Dr. Richard Montali

Dr. Richard Montali was the Acting Registrar throughout 2004. Dr. Montali continues to be a scientific advisor to the Registry.

Dick received his DVM from Cornell in 1964, worked in a mixed practise for 3 years and completed a 3 year pathology residency in the Dept. of Comparative Medicine at Johns Hopkins Medical School. After obtaining board certification as a veterinary pathologist in 1970, he joined the veterinary staff as Chief pathologist for the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington DC. He completed 29 years of service at the National Zoo performing diagnostic pathology, investigating zoo and wildlife diseases and providing a training program in zoo pathology. He maintains academic joint appointments at Johns Hopkins Medical School, George Washington University School of Medicine and the U.S. Uniform Services Medical School.

Dick's research interests have been mainly infectious diseases of carnivores, New World primates and ungulates with emphasis on mycobacteria and viral infections. He has authored/co-authored over 200 scientific articles on zoo and wildlife diseases. Dick joined the Taronga Zoo as acting pathologist from 2004 to early 2005 and remains as an advisor and collaborator to the Registry.
